Glossary

A study or work permit, or other documentation providing temporary permission to live, work or study in Ontario. Document must be issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

The natural or legally adopted children, or stepchildren, or children for whom the UHIP member has been appointed legal guardian, whose primary residence is with the UHIP member, are unmarried, and dependent on the UHIP member for support. The child/children must be:

  • under age 22
  • under age 25, if studying full-time at an accredited educational institution (annual proof of attendance may be required by Sun Life)
  • any age, if mentally or physically disabled and not capable of self-sustaining employment, provided that the disability began:
    • while the child was covered under the plan, or
    • before the member applied for UHIP coverage, only if the child was disabled before age 22 or 25 if a full-time student (proof of disability and its continuation may be required by Sun Life) (See the sample below for the Eligibility of Disabled Child/Children)

A dependant is the spouse and/or child(ren) of the member.

The intentional deception or misrepresentation that an individual knows to be false or does not believe to be true and makes, knowing that the deception could result in some unauthorized benefit to himself/herself or some other person.

A full-time regular and term student who:

  • holds a valid study permit issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada,
  • is registered in any given semester in an approved degree program, as defined by the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities,
  • is a temporary resident who has been approved by an immigration officer to study in Canada, as defined by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada,
  • has paid a required tuition fee for the program,
  • is in regular attendance, as defined by regulations of the participating University, and
  • is actively pursuing an undergraduate, graduate, or post-graduate degree.

International Health Care Network. A search tool provided by Sun life that allows a quick location of a preferred provider.

Any undergraduate, graduate, or postgraduate student (full-time or part-time), a short-term visitor associated with a participating University, or an employee of a participating University.

A person who does not normally live in Ontario.

The provincial health care plan provided to Ontario residents by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

Outside of the 10 provinces and 3 territories of Canada.

The portion or entirety of an expense for services that is not eligible for reimbursement and that is the financial responsibility of the member. An out-of-pocket expense may result from a fee for service that exceeds the maximum eligible reimbursement amount or for a service that is not covered under UHIP.

A student who was previously enrolled as a full-time student and who:

  • has been approved by a participating University to continue studies on a part-time basis,
  • holds a valid study permit issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada,
  • is registered in an approved degree program, as defined by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities,
  • is registered in an English as a Second Language program and/or non-degree program at a participating University,
  • has paid the required tuition fee for the program,
  • is in attendance as defined by regulations of the participating university for a part-time student,
  • is actively pursuing an undergraduate, graduate, or post-graduate degree that the student will be able complete within the generally established timeframe for the program, as established by the participating University, and
  • is enrolled as a part time student for a maximum of 6 semesters.

Plans that have been pre-approved by Sun Life as offering coverage equal to UHIP. Members of a pre-approved plan are eligible for UHIP exemption.

A network of hospitals and clinics established by the insurer to assist members by limiting out-of-pocket exposure and providing health care providers with direct insurer billing.

The amount paid or to be paid by the member for coverage under UHIP.

You need Sun Life’s pre-approval for repatriation service reimbursement.

Terminally ill
  • Maximum: $20,000 for repatriation of a terminally ill member.
  • A terminally ill person is someone with 12 months or less to live and the medical condition is stable. Either Sun Life or the covered person may request repatriation to his/her home country.


Death
  • Contact Sun Life as soon as it’s reasonably possible to request repatriation.
  • Maximum: $20,000 coverage for one of the following services:
    • Repatriation (return to home country): coverage is for reasonable and customary cost of preparing and transporting the deceased to their home country, the cost of transportation and a standard shipping container. Expenses incurred in the home country and expenses related to special traditional funeral rituals or ceremonies are not covered, or
    • Cremation: coverage is for reasonable and customary costs of eligible expenses that relate to the preparation of the body for cremation in Ontario. Expenses incurred in the home country and expenses related to special traditional funeral rituals or ceremonies are not covered, or
    • Funeral in Ontario: coverage is for the reasonable and customary costs of eligible expenses (in Ontario) that relate to the preparation of the body for burial, the cemetery plot, and cost of a casket. Expenses related to special traditional funeral rituals or ceremonies are not covered.

Individuals who are at a participating University for a brief, defined period of time, not necessarily related to an academic term, including:

  • visiting scholars
  • international researchers
  • conference participants
  • other

Your spouse by marriage or under any other formal union recognized by law, or your partner of the opposite sex or of the same sex who has been publicly represented as your spouse for at least the last 12 months, is an eligible dependent. You can only cover one spouse at a time.

Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada (Sun Life) is the UHIP insurer. Sun Life insures all eligible expenses under Group Policy 50150. Inquiries should be directed to Sun Life at:

Insurance that provides additional coverage for services that are not covered under UHIP (e.g. prescription drugs, dental care). These plans are separate from your UHIP coverage.

When you visit a health care provider in Ontario, he/she may ask you to sign a consent form, agreeing that the laws of Ontario will govern the relationship between you and your health care provider in any dispute that may arise between you and him/her. What this means is that, if you get into legal proceedings against the physician, these proceedings will be heard in Ontario courts, not the courts in your home country. Health care providers outside Ontario may also ask you to sign a similar form.
UHIP cannot advise you to sign or not to sign the consent form, nor is it responsible for any liability/costs associated with this form or with any dispute between you and your health care provider. The decision to sign the form is yours.

The person or persons designated by each University to enroll eligible participants in the plan and perform related administrative duties.

The information presented on this website summarizes the main aspects of UHIP. Your actual benefits from UHIP will be determined according to the terms and conditions of the insurance contract with the UHIP insurer. No typographical or mechanical error made by a university or any of the parties to the UHIP insurance contract will invalidate insurance otherwise in force, or continue insurance otherwise terminated under the insurance policy's terms and conditions.
