UHIP coverage

UHIP coverage may be extended to eligible dependants of enrolled students or staff. To receive UHIP coverage the dependant must also reside in Ontario. Dependants covered by UHIP get the same health insurance coverage for health care services as a primary UHIP plan member.

Eligible dependants include

  • A legal or common-law spouse (including same-sex spouse) , where a conjugal relationship has existed for at least 12 months
  • A child or children, under 22 years of age and unmarried
  • A child or children, under 25 years of age and unmarried, if they are studying full-time at an accredited educational institution
  • A child or children, of any age and unmarried, if mentally or physically disabled

Other family members, such as siblings or parents, are not considered eligible dependents.

How do I enroll my dependants in UHIP?

Dependants are not automatically enrolled in UHIP. To enroll your eligible dependant family member(s), you must contact the UHIP Plan Administrator at your university.

You are required to enroll your eligible dependant(s) within 30 days of when they become eligible for UHIP. Otherwise a late fee may apply

When will my dependant's UHIP coverage begin?

For dependants of a student enrolled at a participating university, UHIP coverage begins on the date they arrive in Canada, but not earlier than the 10th day of the month before the primary member’s academic term begins.

For example:

Arrival in Canada August 05, 2014
Start of academic term September 1, 2014
Start of UHIP coverage August 10, 2014

For dependants of an employee at a participating university, UHIP coverage begins on the date they arrive in Canada, but not earlier than 20 days prior to the primary member’s employment date with the University.

For example:

Arrival in Canada August 16, 2014
Start of employment September 28, 2014
Start of UHIP coverage September 8, 2014

For dependants who arrive at a later date than the primary UHIP member, UHIP coverage begins on the date they arrive in Canada.

How much does UHIP cost?

The cost for enrolling your dependants in UHIP can be determined by viewing the current annual premium costs.

If you have any questions, please contact the UHIP Plan Administrator at your university.

When will my dependant's UHIP coverage end?

Your dependant(s) UHIP coverage will end on the earliest of the following dates:

  • the last day of the month in which you have paid UHIP premium for your dependant;
  • the termination date of your dependant's coverage;
  • the last day of the month in which your dependant is no longer considered a dependant;
  • the date that Sun Life obtains reasonable evidence that medical clearance was fraudulently obtained from Citizenship and Immigration Canada as a result of either non-disclosure or submission of false medical test results

If you have any questions about the end date of your dependant’s UHIP coverage, please contact the UHIP Plan Administrator at your university.
