Does it matter where I go to receive medical care?

Yes. Not all health care providers in Ontario accept UHIP.

In the event that your UHIP coverage is not accepted, you may have to pay out of pocket for your medical expenses, even if those expenses are covered under UHIP. If that happens, you will have to submit your expenses with Sun Life for reimbursement. Make sure you obtain a receipt for medical services you receive from your health care provider.

Knowing which health care providers accept UHIP is important and can save you from financial burden! To learn how to find a provider that accepts UHIP, please see the Preferred Provider Network section.

Preferred Provider Network?

Sun Life has worked closely with many health care providers in Ontario to create a Preferred Provider Network. This network is made up of health care providers that will recognize the UHIP plan as valid health insurance coverage.

You can find a preferred health care provider by clicking here. This online search tool allows you to find the preferred health care provider closest to you! You can easily register online using your email address and UHIP policy number.

If you choose to be treated at, or are admitted to a hospital that is not part of the Preferred Provider Network, it is possible that you will have to pay expenses in addition to what UHIP reimburses.

Once you register, don’t forget to check out the Article Centre to access and browse numerous articles on the Canadian health system, travel safety, living abroad, and more!

In the Event of a Hospital Admission

If you or a member of your family is hospitalized or intending to be hospitalized for more than 48 hours, it is important to notify Sun Life as soon as possible of this admission.

If you or a member of your family is hospitalized in a hospital not in the Preferred Provider Network, Sun Life may relocate you to another hospital of its choice, if the transfer is approved by your attending physician.

Please check the online search tool or call Sun Life, in advance, to verify whether the hospital you intend to visit currently has an agreement with the insurer at 1-866-500-UHIP (8447) toll free.

Treatment Consent Form

When visiting a health care provider in Ontario, you may be asked to sign a consent form, agreeing that the laws of Ontario will govern the relationship between you and your health care provider in any dispute that may arise between you and the provider. What this means is that, if you get into legal proceedings against the physician, these proceedings will be heard in Ontario courts, not the courts in your home country. Health care providers outside Ontario may also ask you to sign a similar form.

UHIP cannot advise you to sign or not to sign the consent form, nor is it responsible for any liability/costs associated with this form or with any dispute between you and your health care provider. The decision to sign the form is yours.
